Uploading Videos to YouTube (for Moodle)

When providing videos for students on Moodle, we recommend first uploading those videos to YouTube. This will allow for the best quality and streaming for your students. In this tutorial, we will provide you with the steps to get your video uploaded to YouTube.

1. Sign up for a YouTube account.

Go to YouTube.com and click SIGN IN on the top right.

Click create account, and choose ‘for myself’.

Follow the steps to create your YouTube account.

2. Verify your account.

By default, you can upload videos that are up to 15 minutes long. Verified accounts can upload videos longer than 15 minutes.

To verify your account, go to https://www.youtube.com/verify

Follow the steps. You can choose to get a verification code through text message on a mobile device or an automated voice call.

3. Upload your videos.

Sign in to YouTube.com

At the top right click on the CREATE button and choose upload video.

A pop-up window will appear and you can either drop your file on the upload icon or click SELECT FILE and browse for the file on your computer.

NOTE: If you have multiple files you want to upload at one time, you may click UPLOAD WITH CLASSIC on the top right. This will allow you to drag multiple files at one time.

Once your video starts uploading, it will use the file name of the video as the title. If you wish, you can rename your video title.

You may also want to add your video to a playlist. You can create a playlist for each course you teach to keep things organized.

Click the NEXT button at the bottom right once finished.

Click the NEXT button again to get to STEP 3 – Visibility.

Select UNLISTED as your visibility option. This will allow anyone with the link to view the video. You can email this link out or add the URL to Moodle for your students.

Unlisted means that only people with the link can watch your video and your video is not searchable from YouTube.

You may also schedule your video to release on a certain date or time. This will allow you to get your videos up early, but still have control as to when the students are able to view them.

Click SAVE at the bottom right.

COPY THE LINK, and paste the URL into Moodle or email the link out to your students.

NOTE: If you are planning to upload more videos in the future, you may want to consider making UNLISTED as your default upload visibility option.

At the top right, click on your account icon and select YouTube Studio.

At the bottom left, click on Settings.

Select Upload Defaults.

Select Unlisted.

Click Save.
